Why a Developmental Approach?

Nelson Mandela University aims to provide a supportive and affirming environment that enables its students to reach their full potential. Student success is promoted by encouraging all students to participate in the academic, social, and personal development initiatives on offer at the Nelson Mandela University.   

In promoting student success, CAAR makes developmental recommendations for each student who has written the Access Assessment Test (AAT) and has been accepted into a Nelson Mandela University academic programme.   

 

What types of developmental recommendations are made by CAAR?

Different types of academic development or academic monitoring recommendations are made. These recommendations identify areas of academic growth for students or suggest that formalized monitoring of student progress is necessary. 

 

How are developmental recommendations communicated?   

The CAAR recommendations are communicated to students in a feedback report with some suggestions on how these recommendations can be implemented. While participation in these developmental initiatives is not usually enforced, students are strongly encouraged to seek out support and develop themselves further in the areas suggested.

A list of students who have received developmental recommendations from CAAR is also sent to the Deans, Directors of Schools, HoDs and Programme Co-ordinators for monitoring and follow-up in the year. 

 

Who is responsible for implementing these developmental recommendations?

Ideally, both students and the university are responsible for developing students to their full potential. While the university is responsible for creating positive learning environments, students are responsible for being active learners who take responsibility for their own learning.  

  

How can we implement these developmental recommendations?

Students are provided with some suggestions in their feedback report on developmental initiatives at Nelson Mandela University which could support them in the areas of growth recommended.

Some learning programmes may also assist students in implementing the developmental recommendations by providing individual or group development and support initiatives within the learning programme or by referring students to workshops or activities offered by Student Counselling or CTLM. The Student Success website for Nelson Mandela University staff provides guidance on developing and supporting students for academic success.
